Journey
Ugandan singer Paulo Kaliika is best known for performing covers of songs by the legendary Paulo Kafeero in the kadongo kamu music genre. Kaliika was born approximately in 1978 in Uganda and grew up in a world that was highly susceptible to music, particularly Kafeero's music. Kafeero was encouraged to sing at a young age by the fact that his aunt possessed nearly all his albums. As a young boy, Kaliika would sing pop Kafeero songs like Kiwenenya Amazina while he accompanied his aunt to the markets. Vendors recognized his talent, which encouraged them to ask him to sing for money. This started his career by getting him to miss school occasionally to perform at markets.
Kafeero's compositions, which are based on the kadongo kamu genre, a classic Ugandan musical genre that is marked by narration and social commentary in Luganda, were the main cause of Kaliika's popularity in the early 2000s. The audience of the genre recognized Kafeero since his delivery included his intricate lyrics and stage presence. One of the major achievements in Kaliika's life came in 2005 when Kaliika participated in the Eagles Production-sponsored Ebbinu Makeke competition that took place at Nakivubo Stadium. Kaliika, who was competing with budding artists, outperformed the rest and was rewarded a bicycle as the best performer of three of Kafeero's songs. It was in this competition that he met his idol Paulo Kafeero, who consented to composing a song in his name and presented him with a present worth Shs 100,000. Unfortunately, Kafeero's poor health and eventual demise. Because of his connection to the name of Kafeero, he had a chance to mingle with key personalities in the Ugandan entertainment circles and gain a larger network of friends. Kaliika is still a high-profile personality whose music continues to uphold the Kadongo Kamu heritage.
